Precinct 2 Commissioner and Democrat candidate for Tarrant County Judge Alisa Simmons, who has faced backlash for her frequent disruptions during Tarrant County Commissioner Court proceedings, now faces scrutiny over her record of voting against law enforcement and public safety.
In August of 2023, Simmons was the lone no vote on the Tarrant County Commissioner Court against a bipartisan measure to provide bulletproof vests for Law Enforcement Officers.
When the vote was taken on August 15, 2023, Simmons broke with fellow democrat Roy Brooks, PCT 1, who voted to approve the contract. When the Dallas Express asked for comment, Simmons did not respond. In other instances when asked about the vote, Simmons instead attacked her opponent, Republican Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare, who is running for reelection.
2023 followed the height of the “Defund the Police” movement within the Democratic Party and saw a nationwide effort by activists and elected Democrats to obstruct law enforcement’s ability to safely perform police duties.
According to DefundThePolice.org, the end goal of the “Defund the Police” movement is the abolition of law enforcement. One of the key pillars is “Disarmament and Demilitarization”, according to the website. It is unclear how formally Alisa Simmons is involved in the Defund the Police movement, but her voting history suggests, at the minimum, an intellectual link.
Early voting is October 19th- 30th, and Election Day is November 3rd.
