If you are a delegate, the next step after your precinct convention is the County and Senate District conventions which are happening this Saturday, March 23!
If you are in a county where the entire county is in one Senate District (SD), you have a County Convention. All residents of your county will attend the same convention. If your county contains two or more SDs, you will attend an SD Convention. For example, residents of Williamson County will attend the Williamson SD 24 or SD 5 Convention.
You will have a limited amount of time to offer or reoffer election integrity resolutions to the Resolutions Committee. You may also have an opportunity to introduce resolutions from the floor. Remember to take at least 3 copies of the resolutions with you to ensure that there are enough.
The Nominations Committee may interview potential delegates and alternates for the state convention. Some held interviews prior to the convention, others may only interview those that have not attended a previous convention. Changes can be made from the floor, but don’t count on that. If you are chosen as an alternate, don’t worry, some delegates will not actually attend and your chances of being seated as a delegate are high.
You may want to pick up a copy of Robert’s Rules of Order to navigate the proceedings, but usually there will be other delegates that are willing to help you. Here is a guide from the GOP that will help.
Please remember that you are not writing legislation. This process is important and it is very helpful to have accurate and robust language in the RPT Platform, but it isn’t law. Getting the main ideas into the platform is key, the actual legislation comes later. Don’t get bogged down in the details. No matter what happens, we can still advocate for all aspects of election integrity in the next legislative session.
