Texas Democrats are facing renewed scrutiny over campaign money tied to billionaire Democratic megadonors with documented relationships with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including Reid Hoffman and Michael Bloomberg. These relationships have received new attention following the release of additional Epstein-related records.
The controversy has become particularly significant in Texas, where Democrats have increasingly attempted to make Epstein and his connections to wealthy and politically powerful figures an issue in the 2026 elections. At the center of the scrutiny is Democratic U.S. Senate nominee James Talarico, whose campaign and related super PAC have received $11.5 million dollars from Hoffman.
Hoffman continued communicating and meeting with Epstein years after Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida in 2008 to charges involving solicitation of a minor and became a registered sex offender. Documents released as part of the Epstein files show that Hoffman later visited Epstein’s private Caribbean island in 2014. An FBI review found no indication of criminal wrongdoing by Hoffman.
But the revelations have created an uncomfortable political situation for Talarico, who has made opposition to billionaires, dark money, and the influence of wealthy donors a central theme of his political message.
The Epstein-linked funding controversy for Texas Democrats is not limited to Talarico.
Former New York City Mayor and Billionaire Michael Bloomberg had a long-time relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, including flying on his plane, inviting Epstein to parties, and fundraisers.
Michael Bloomberg gave Leadership PAC $54.1 million, 99% of all contributions it has ever received. Leadership PAC has given $47.6 million to Leadership for Educational Equity (LEE).
LEE, since 2024, in addition to giving $1,000 to James Talarico, has donated to two Democratic candidates for the Texas House of Representatives in competitive general election campaigns.
Longtime Democrat activist Katie O’Brien Duzan received $2,500 from LEE. O’Brien Duzan is the Democratic nominee for State House in House District 94 in Eastern Tarrant County. HD 94 is a must-win seat for Democrats in their efforts to take control of the Texas House of Representatives. O’Brien Duzan faces Republican and Texas Center for Arts + Academics Board Chairman Cheryl Bean for the seat.
Tyler Smith is the Democratic nominee in House District 138 in Houston. He received $1,000 directly from LEE. Smith is also in a must-win race for Democrats and faces incumbent Republican Lacey Hull.
The Epstein issue is especially politically sensitive for Democrats as they have attempted to make Epstein a campaign issue. That rhetoric has now opened Democrats to questions about their own financial supporters.
Even Talarico’s Democratic primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, raised Hoffman’s Epstein connection while criticizing the enormous sums of outside money supporting Talarico.
“If one of the individuals who donated publicly is someone in the Epstein files, imagine who else has given anonymously,” Crockett said during the Democratic primary, referring to the dark-money organizations helping finance pro-Talarico efforts.
There is no evidence that Talarico, O’Brien Duzan, or Smith was involved in relationships with Epstein. With Epstein becoming an increasingly prominent issue in the 2026 campaign, and these high-profile Democrats receiving funding linked to Epstein, that question is unlikely to disappear before Election Day.
